The Book of Fish

Lee Joon-ik, 126 minutes, Historical Drama, in Korean with English subtitles, 2021

In 1801, after a new king ascended the throne, a scholar, Chung Yak-jeon, who served the late king is exiled to Heuk-san Island. When he lands on the unknown island with fears, he is amazed by wonders of various sea creatures. There he meets Chang-dae, a young fisherman with big dreams, who is a huge admirer of Confucianism and has a wide knowledge of the sea. Fascinated by his knowledge, Chung decides to write a book about the sea and asks Chang-dae to help him in exchange for guiding him into studying Confucianism.

The movie has won numerous prizes including: the FIPRESCI Award, Best Actor, Best Film and Best Screenplay Awards at the Korean Association of Film Critics’ Awards, The Buil Film Award for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Actress and Best Cinematography. It was also nominated for the Asian Film Awards and Chunsa Film Art Awards.

Jung-soo, the manager of a car company, is on his way home when the poorly- constructed tunnel he is driving through collapses, leaving him trapped. The only thing he can see around him is concrete wreckage, and all he has to sustain himself is 78% of his phone’s battery, two bottles of water, and his daughter’s birthday cake.

The country is thrown into panic and the government rushes to put together a rescue plan, but public opinion becomes divided over whether to proceed with a rescue effort that seems doomed to fail.

“Tunnel” has won several awards including: The Critic’s Prize at Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film, Chunsa Film Awards for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. It was selected among the Ten Best Films of the Year at the Korean Association of Film Critics’ Awards and has also won the Popularity Award at Blue Dragon Awards.

The King’s Letters

Jo Chul-hyun, 110 minutes, Historical Drama, in Korean with English subtitles, 2019

Set in the late Joseon dynasty, despite so many accomplishments he has made for the people, King Sejong insists on his biggest goal: the invention of original letters that can be read and written by all people. But courtiers, who want to dominate the knowledge and the power, are against his will and discourage his belief. One day, frustrated King Sejong hears about a phonogram expert and secretly brings him into the palace.

The film has received Best Supporting Actress Award at the Korean Film Producers Association Awards. It was also nominated for the Chunsa Film Art Awards and Grand Bell Awards.
