1. Call for applications: The 10th Rawi Screenwriters’ Lab

The Royal Film Commission- Jordan, in consultation with the Sundance Institute, welcomes applications to the tenth round of Rawi Screenwriters’ Lab. The Lab will take place from October

28th to November 2nd, 2014 in Jordan whereby up to eight screenwriters will be selected to participate in this year’s round.

Rawi Screenwriters’ Lab is designed for Arab independent screenwriters working on their first or second feature narrative screenplay. It offers them the opportunity to develop their screenplays under the guidance of veteran screenwriters. The latter, known as Creative Advisors, will have one- on-one intensive story sessions and conversations with the participants about their projects to embrace their vision and to help them find the most compelling way to tell their stories.

Eligibility:

  • Rawi Screenwriters’ Lab is open for screenwriters, co-writers, or writers/directors.
  • Screenwriters working on their first or second narrative feature screenplay can apply.
  • Applicants must submit a complete narrative feature screenplay.
  • Only Arab screenwriters/filmmakers are eligible to apply, regardless of their country of residence.

To Apply:

Please fill in the online Application Form in English and send it to rawi@film.jo Please enclose the following (soft copy only, word format and in English):

  • Cover letter introducing yourself and your project (e.g.: Why are you applying to the program? Are you collaborating with a co-writer or a director on the project? Do you intend to direct the project and what is the status of the project at the stage of submission).
  • Complete feature narrative screenplay that must include a title page with the project title, name of the writer as well as the project registration number.

Please make sure the script is registered.

Note: Screenplays are to be admitted in English.

Screenplays in Arabic will be initially considered provided that the applicant send in an English translation once requested to do so by Rawi team at a later stage.

  • Logline: a one-line sentence description of the project.
  • Synopsis: one full A4 page.
  • Filmmaker’s statement; please describe your vision and creative approach to the project and why you want to tell this story.
  • Screenwriter’s biography.
  • Online links of your previous works (short, feature or documentary). Please make sure all previous works submitted have English subtitles.

Please do not send DVDs unless requested by the Rawi Team.

2. Call for entries: Karama Human Rights Film Festival 2014 Calls for Films

Karama Human Rights Film Festival (KHRFF), organized by Ma3mal 612- Think Factory, is calling for film entries for its 5th edition from December 5th until December 10th 2014, in Jordan.

KHRFF focuses on Human Rights films with strong human rights theme at their core, which are significant to the Arab region, especially films about “War and Displacement”.

The festival is currently accepting entries for short and feature films of the following genres: Fiction, Documentary and Animation.

Requirements:

For the film to be considered, please include the following for each submission:

  • A preview screener via (Vimeo, Dropbox, or any similar platform)
  • The signed entry form filled out in Arabic or English
  • Film stills (3 at least), one photo of the director (All photos should have a resolution of 300 dpi.)
  • Press and Marketing material (Synopsis, credit sheet, directors biography, trailer, poster, postcard)
  • All photos, technical information, press and marketing materials should be sent to the following email: info@karamafestival.org

3. Call for submissions: Abu Dhabi Film Festival Opens Submissions for Second Session of SANAD Grants

SANAD, the Abu Dhabi Film Festival's (ADFF) development and post-production fund, has called for entries for the second session of grants from across the Arab World.

ADFF, powered by twofour54, the commercial arm of Media Zone Authority – Abu Dhabi, offers Arab filmmakers with projects up to US$20,000 for development and up to US$60,000 for post- production.

SANAD grants may be awarded to producers and directors who are citizens of one of the following Arab countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Projects must be associated with a company producing in at least one of the listed countries.

The deadline for submissions is July 15th, 2014.

Successful grantees will be informed at the end of August ahead of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival in October 2014.

4. Call for submissions: Palestine’s Insan Human Rights Film Festival Seeks Films

Palestine’s Insan Human Rights Film Festival, whose fourth edition is to take place in Ramallah from

September 11 to 16, is currently seeking human rights-related narrative feature and documentary films produced in 2012 or 2013.

The festival's organizer, the Palestinian Social Cinema Arts Association (PSCAA), believes in the importance of cinema as a means to develop youth and spread the culture of non-violence, tolerance and reconciliation. Cinema is a unique form because it is able to transcend illiteracy.

As well as open air film screenings, the festival will include a three-day filmmaking workshop, a one day workshop on lights and camera for children, a screenplay writing seminar, a women’s rights seminar and a discussion panel.

The festival is also to tour in four other Palestinian cities.

5. Call for submissions: The 14th Beirut International Film Festival Seeks Films

The Beirut International Film Festival (BIFF) in its 14th edition will take place 1-9 October 2014.

BIFF provides a platform for freedom of expression and human rights. It also offers exposure for young filmmakers from the MENA region, all over the world, and promotes young Lebanese filmmakers as well.

BIFF covers the following sections:

PANORAMA - International Feature films

CULINARY - films on food, or food related subjects

COMPETITION : Shorts, documentaries and Feature films from the Middle East and North Africa region, including Turkey & Iran..

6. Call for submissions: The 36th Cairo International Film Festival Seeks Films

The 36th Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), to be held in Cairo from November 9 to 18, is calling for films.

CIFF is an annual festival organized by the Ministry of Culture in Egypt. It is accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations FIAPF and is committed to comply with all its stipulations.

CIFF aims to contribute the art and science of film (Fiction – Documentary – Animation) and encourage intercultural dialogue.

The CIFF sections are:

  1. International competition for feature films
  2. Special presentations
  3. Festival of festivals
  4. Films on films
  5. Feature classics films
  6. Short film classics
  7. The national cinema guest of honor

Rules and regulations:

Films must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the International Competition, Special Presentations and Festival of Festivals sections of the 2014 CIFF:

  • Films must be produced between 2013 and 2014.
  • The duration of each film must exceed the sixty-minute mark.
  • All films must not have been screened in Egypt before.
  • All films must not have been broadcasted on any media before.
  • All films must fill the required entry form.

7. Call for applications: Produire au Sud Seeks Fiction Feature Film Projects

Produire au Sud, is calling for fiction feature film projects from Africa (including Jordan, Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Palestine and Tunisia), Latin America, and Asia to take part in its workshop on film coproduction at the 36th Festival des 3 continents this November.

The workshop aims to familiarize young producers based in Africa, Latin America, and Asia with important tools and international coproduction techniques by coaching individual projects in development.

Six film projects will be selected to take part in the workshop to take place in Nantes, France, from November 24 to 30.

Requirements:

  • The producer and the director must be native from Africa, Asia or Latin America. (Two different countries accepted)
  • The project must be represented by a producer and a director.
  • Projects have to be fiction feature films under development. (Documentaries and television films are not accepted).
  • Projects have to last 60 minutes minimum.
  • The producer must already have experience in the production of short or feature films.
  • The producer can already have produced a feature film in the frame of the international coproduction.
  • Each production company can only apply with one project per workshop.
  • Application files (in French, "dossiers") must be completed in English or in French.
  • The full script is requested in case of selection.
  • Applicants must speak English, as all classes and meetings are in English.
  • A director cannot apply as the producer of his/her own film project.

8. Call for applications: “Write Your Doc Short” Workshop Open for Applications

Young filmmakers with a short fiction project in development can apply for Beirut DC Lab's ‘Write your doc short’ workshop.

During the 7-day workshop, to be held from July 21 to 26, Lebanese filmmaker Ghassan Salhab is to cover how to write a short documentary film.

Requirements:

Interested filmmakers are invited to send the following documents – in English, French or Arabic – to: lab@beirutdc.org

  • A synopsis (2 pages)
  • A letter of intention (2 page)
  • A draft script (if available)
  • A biography and filmography (1 page)
  • One of the filmmaker’s previous works (link)

9. Call for submissions: Documentary Proposal Writing Workshop Seeks Projects

Arab-speaking filmmakers based in Lebanon, with a documentary project in development, looking for funds and currently writing a film proposal, can apply for Beirut DC Lab's ‘Write your doc proposal’ workshop.

During the 6-day workshop, to be held from July 7 to 12, Lebanese filmmaker Eliane Raheb is to cover how to write a proposal for a documentary film project.

Rules and Regulations:

Interested filmmakers are invited to send the following documents – in English, French or Arabic - to lab@beirutdc.org:

  • A synopsis (1-2 pages)
  • A letter of intention (1 page)
  • A draft treatment (2 pages)
  • A research plan (1-2 pages)
  • A development budget (1 page)

10.Call for submissions: London’s Film Africa Calls for Films

The 4th Film Africa festival will take place between October 31 and November 9 in different London venues.

African filmmakers living on the continent can submit films on any topic to Film Africa for its 2014 festival edition. All lengths and genres are accepted. Filmmakers from the diaspora and non- African filmmakers can also send in their films relating to Africa.

Film Africa endeavors to complete all selection procedures by September 1, 2014 and all successful submissions will receive notification after that date. Film Africa will be comprised of a main strand of features and a shorts program, including fiction, documentary, animation and experimental titles.

This year, Film Africa reintroduces an Audience Award for the best feature film, as voted by the festival’s audiences. Both competitions will carry cash prizes of £1,000 each for the winning films.

Rules and regulations:

  • Film must be sent as a secure video link or as a DVD copy, providing English subtitled version where appropriate.
  • Film details (including title, director, year and country of production, screening format and running time) must be clearly labelled on the cover of the DVD or included in the email.
  • Submissions must also include a synopsis, an EPK and any other additional promotional material for the film and director.

11. Call for applications: Biennale College- Cinema Third Edition

La Biennale di Venezia has launched the third edition of the “Biennale College – Cinema”, a unique initiative to support teams of directors and producers from around the world to make their first or second micro-budget audio-visual work.

The Biennale College – Cinema is an advanced workshop for the development and production of micro budget audio visual works. The challenge is to succeed in creating –three feature-length micro budget (€ 150,000) audio-visual works, at the end of a program of activities.

Initially, twelve micro-budget projects will be selected and participate in a 10-day workshop in October 2014. Following the completion of the workshop, three projects will be chosen to participate in the subsequent two phases of the program.

The three successful film project teams will receive € 150,000 production award and will be presented at the 2015 Venice Film Festival. They will also be screened online on the Sala Web, a virtual screening room that will coexist with the traditional screening rooms on the Lido.

Requirements:

  • A Synopsis (1 page, max 350 words or 1.800 characters)
  • A treatment for a micro-budget project (5-10 pages, max 3.500 words or 18.000 characters) that fully describes the project. It can be a feature film, an animation, a documentary or a trans- media project – all genres eligible.
  • A Director’s Vision
  • Previous works by the director (max 2) digital or on film, to be uploaded directly on the website.
  • A Casting Idea (1 page, max 350 words or 1.800 characters)
  • A Total Budget up to a maximum of 150.000€
  • Biographies of the director and the producer
  • A Production Company Profile
  • A Video-Presentation by the director (max 3 minutes)
  • An Audience Engagement Plan (1 page, max 350 words or 1.800 characters), which describes how to create audience awareness through on-line communities
  • Rights Disclosure with regards to full ownership of rights to the submitted project or, should the rights of third parties be involved, a guarantee that the acquisition of all rights in view of production has been concluded or is currently being negotiated. In the latter case the cost must be indicated in the budget, which in any case as specified above, cannot exceed the total of 150,000 euros.

The deadline for applications is on July 1st, 2014 only to teams of directors at their first or second feature and producers with variable degrees of expertise, who must have produced at least 3 audio-visual works distributed and/or presented at Festivals.
