Dancing 7 Cities
Nicholas Rowe, 55 minutes, Documentary, in English and Arabic with English subtitles, New Zealand, 2018
Refugee camps, transport hubs, bridges, barriers, leisure spaces and marketplaces are creatively re-examined through dance in cities across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific. Local artists and arts organizations explore what their cities mean to them, and how urban spaces can be physically re-imagined with moving bodies.
Community dance artist Nicholas Rowe narrates this film and introduces community dance artists and organizations focused on elderly, disabled, young, migrant and refugee dancers in Beirut, Siena, Darwin, Helsinki, Vientiane, Suva and Ramallah. Experiences of exile, dementia, unemployment, gender, sexuality and political identity emerge within collaborative dance-making processes, as very diverse dancers share movements and perspectives.
"Dancing 7 Cities" documents unique stories from marginalized communities, and questions how dance and the camera can support social inclusion.
