Jeff Vespa, 90 min, Biography/ Drama/ History, in Russian language with English subtitles, 2018

Based on a true story, a small-town Kazakh singer, Amre Kashaubaev, journeys to Paris to compete in an international singing competition at the 1925 Paris Expo. Along the way, he befriends American songwriter George Gershwin, thus forming a beautiful and unlikely friendship. 

The film follows the bright but short and mysteriously interrupted life of the Kazakh talented artist Amre Kashaubaev. It was Kashaubaev who, for the first time, presented to the European public the vocal performing art of the Kazakhs and the national instrument dombra at the World Music Competition in Paris. There, the 36-year-old singer created a furor and won a silver medal.

The film has won numerous awards including: The Global Grand Jury Prize for Best Film and the Silver Screen Prize at Hollywood Film Festival, the Festival Prize for Best Production Design at Manchester International Film Festival as well as Best Narrative Film at and Best Actor at Richmond International Film Festival.

Spanning nearly nine decades from the 1930s to the present, this sweeping yet personal epic follows several generations of a Kazakhstan family through war, famine, collectivization, separation and the determination of the clan to remain united. 

The film tells the story of Ilyes, a young boy who is separated from his mother by war and journeys through harrowing experiences from childhood into adulthood without her to protect him. Ilyas shows incredible fortitude, patriotism, courage and unprecedented dedication. Even before the fear of death, he does not lose hope of reuniting with his own mother. 

The movie was selected as the Kazakhstani entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards. It has won the Ak Ilbirs National Film Awards for Best Central Asia Film.
