Taste of Cement

Ziad Kalthoum, 85 min, Documentary, in Arabic with English subtitles, Syria, 2017

Beirut 2016: Syrian construction workers are building skyscrapers while they are locked in the building site, as they are not allowed to circulate after 7 pm; a curfew only imposed on them. Cut off from their homeland, they gather at night around a small TV set to get the news from Syria. Tormented by anguish and anxiety, while suffering the deprivation of the most basic human and workers’ rights, they keep hoping for a different life.

In “Taste of Cement”, Ziad Kalthoum composes a striking essay on what it means to live in exile, in difficult conditions, with no possibility to return home.

The film has taken part in dozens of international film festivals and won many awards, including: Best Feature of the International Competition at Visions du Réel in Nyon (Switzerland), Best Documentary Feature at Dubai International Film Festival, The Critics Awards at Arab Cinema Center for Best Documentary, Grand Prix for the Best Feature Documentary – Mediterranean Film Festival, The Emerging International Filmmaker Award at Open City Documentary Festival in London, The Harrell Award for Best Documentary Feature at Camden International Film Festival, The Best Doc Film – Batumi International Art-House Film Festival, Doc Alliance Selection Award , The Flinders University International Best Documentary Award at Adelaide Film Festival, The New Wave Competition Prize at La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival, Jury Prize at FRONTDOC 2017, The Audience Award at Ramdam Film Festival, Best Documentary at Gabes Film Festival - Tunisia.
